National 4 Business

Business plays an important role in society. We all rely on businesses and entrepreneurs to create wealth, prosperity, jobs and choices. The purpose of the Course is to develop learners’ understanding of the way in which businesses operate in the current dynamic, changing, competitive and economic environments, and to encourage enterprising attitudes. The course aims to enable learners to develop:

  • knowledge and understanding of business concepts in a range of contexts
  • awareness of the processes and procedures businesses use to ensure customers’ needs are met
  • enterprising skills, and adopt enterprising attributes, by participating in practical activities in realistic business situations
  • financial awareness through a business context
  • an insight into the impact of the economy on businesses and our daily lives, thus gaining economic awareness

Certification is by ongoing assessment in class with a pass/fail awarded.

National 5 Business

The course highlights ways in which organisations operate and the steps they take to achieve their goals. It enables candidates to understand and make use of business information to interpret and report on overall business performance, in a range of contexts. The course enables candidates to develop:

  • knowledge and understanding of the ways in which society relies on business to satisfy needs and wants
  • an insight into the systems organisations use to ensure customers’ needs are met
  • enterprising skills and attributes
  • financial awareness, in a business context
  • an insight into how organisations organise their resources for maximum efficiency and to improve their overall performance
  • an awareness of how external influences impact on organisations

How it is assessed: Assignment (usually Oct-Dec) - 30 marks - 5 hours. Question Paper in main exam diet, 90 marks – 2 hours

Higher Business

The course highlights the different ways in which large organisations operate. Candidates learn to understand and make use of business information to interpret and report on overall business performance, in a range of contexts. Using current business theory and practice, the course reflects the integrated nature of large organisations, their functions and decision-making processes. Candidates develop understanding of:

  • the ways in which society relies on organisations and how external influences can affect them
  • a range of methods that businesses and other organisations use to meet customer need
  • enterprising skills and attributes
  • how to analyse and interpret business information and communicate it in a clear and concise way

How it is assessed: Assignment (usually Oct-Dec), 30 marks – 8 hours. Question Paper in main exam diet, 90 marks – 2 hours 45.

Advanced Higher Business (via Perth High School)

The course prepares candidates to play an active part in Scotland’s vibrant and innovative business culture, by equipping them with an understanding of the local, national, and global nature of business. This includes the challenges posed by globalisation and the effect it has on Scotland’s businesses and the business environment. Candidates develop analytical and research skills by investigating real organisations in a range of contexts.

The course aims to enable candidates to:

  • enhance the skills of independent learning, research, critical analysis, and problem solving in a business context
  • apply business and management concepts and theories to reach conclusions
  • evaluate the social, ethical, and global factors that affect local, national, and multinational organisations
  • analyse and evaluate leadership theories, management schools of thought and approaches to managing change
  • prepare and critically evaluate a range of analytical techniques and management techniques used to assist in effective planning and decision making at a strategic level

How it is assessed: Project 40 marks. Question Paper in main exam diet, 80 marks – 2 hours 45.
